Managing Stress Through Diet and Lifestyle

Do you find yourself stressed every now and then? Small amounts of stress are not harmful and it pushes you to do your best but after a point it can become a threat to your health, work and relationships. There are lots of studies linking stress to tons of health problems and this raises the need for managing stress through diet and lifestyle.

Exercise
Regular exercise is one of the best ways to relieve stress. It also helps to relieve muscle tension. There are various types of physical activities that you can try. Exercise will also help you keep fit. If you don’t like to exercise or hit the gym, you can also try these:

  • Tai- chi
  • Yoga
  • Walking

Meditate
Meditation for a few minutes every day can help you relax. It is known to reduce blood pressure and pulse rates. Sit in a place free from any distractions and breathe in and out. Slowly start relaxing your muscles from head to toe. You can even try pranayama to help you relax!

Hobbies
Invest your time in hobbies to help you relax. Doing things you like lifts up your mood instantly! Bring out your artistic side with drawing, painting, colouring, etc. Try reading a novel or even watching movies.

DIET

Now we come to the most important part – The Diet. Following a healthy diet can improve your immunity and lower your blood pressure. Include a variety of foods in your diet and avoid processed/junk foods as much as you can!
Here are some good foods for you:

1. Complex carbs

Complex carbs are a simple term for whole foods. Include a lot of whole grains in your diet. They help curb your blood sugar levels and produces serotonin which is also known as the feel good hormone.

2. Fruits and veggies

Fruits and vegetables contain vitamins and minerals which help build your immunity. They also contain antioxidants 

3. Omega 3 fats

Omega 3 fats are good for your heart and also help women with PMS (pre menstrual syndrome). Fatty fish like tuna, salmon, mackerel, halibut, sardines, herring etc have good amounts of omega 3 fats. Walnuts and flaxseed are the best sources for vegetarians!

4. Green tea

Green tea has powerful antioxidants in the form of compounds like flavonoids and catechins. They get rid of the formation of free radicals in the body and have no calories!
