Breakfast means breaking the fast from the time you spent sleeping. A lot of people tend to skip breakfast in the morning simply because they don’t feel hungry or don’t have time to prepare breakfast. Breakfast fills you up with energy and helps kick-start your day!

Skipping breakfast...

  • Drops blood sugar level
  • Slows down metabolism
  • Increases risk of heart disease
  • Produces stress hormones

1. Drops blood sugar level :

Breakfast is the first meal of the day and it helps to restore glycogen and insulin levels in the body. When you skip it, the restoration is incomplete and leaves you feeling hungry, fatigued and cranky. This will make you eat more during lunch and dinner!

2. Slows down metabolism :
When you sleep you fast for 6-8 hours. During this time the body stores the calories you had consumed. When you skip breakfast, the body doesn’t get energy and this slows down your metabolism.

3. Increases risk of heart disease :
The American Heart Association did a longitudinal study to prove that people who skipped breakfast were more likely to develop a heart disease when compared to those who consumed breakfast regularly.

4. Produces stress hormones :
Cortisol is also known as stress hormone and is needed for various bodily functions. If you skip breakfast, cortisol levels increase and make you feel anxious.

A good breakfast
Most of the foods we consume are high on carbohydrates and low in protein. A good Healthy breakfast is a combination of both carbohydrates and protein. Here are some examples of a healthy breakfast foods – idli sambhar, pongal, veg dahlia, stuffed paratha and curd, bread with omelette and veggies, moong dal cheela, missal pav, dal kichdi, etc.

If you are unable to have a good breakfast with protein in it, you can always have a whey protein shake along with your breakfast to meet your daily protein requirement!
