A study conducted by IMRB (Indian Market Research Bureau) found that over 80% of Indian diets are protein deficient. The study was conducted across 7 major cities in India where over 90% of the subjects were non-vegetarians. You might think having Dal, Rajma and Channa will give you the protein you require but that’s not the case. Pulses contain 20% protein and the rest are just carbohydrates. A combination of cereals and pluses provide more protein but is certainly not meeting your daily requirements. An average person requires about 1 g per kg body weight (National Institute of Nutrition). The protein requirements of athletes are sports persons are much higher.
